Australia beat France on penalties to reach semifinals

In a thrilling quarter-final clash at the Women's World Cup, Australia managed to secure a historic victory over France, prevailing 7-6 in a nail-biting penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regular time and extra time. The match showcased intense drama and remarkable performances from both sides.

Australia's goalkeeper, Mackenzie Arnold, emerged as the hero of the shootout, displaying incredible skill and composure by saving three French penalties. Astonishingly, Arnold even took a penalty herself, but unfortunately missed the target. However, the defining moment arrived when Cortnee Vine confidently stepped up to the spot and converted the crucial penalty that propelled Australia into the semi-finals.

The French team, eager to replicate their 2011 semi-final success, dominated the proceedings during the first half and extra time. Regrettably for them, their efforts didn't translate into goals, and they will surely rue a number of missed opportunities as they make their way back home.

Throughout the match, Australia's forward Mary Fowler had several clear-cut chances to break the deadlock, but her endeavors were thwarted, including a sensational block from French defender Elisa de Almeida. Captain Sam Kerr, who was brought on as a substitute in the 55th minute, also struggled to find the target with a clear shot on goal.

With this monumental victory, Australia has etched its name into the tournament's history books, reaching the semi-finals of the Women's World Cup for the first time. Their next challenge awaits against the winner of the England versus Colombia encounter, promising fans another exciting and fiercely contested showdown on the horizon.
